Parenting for Academic Success: Ten Easy Steps-One Giant Leap
Author: Harvey Hazen
I am a consultant and a coach. As a coach I am dedicated to helping parents and students achieve academic success that leads to a successful future. I believe that all students have the ability to reach their maximum potential given the right motivation and support. It is never too late to achieve those goals and parents play an enormous role in that achievement.
Having spent 37 years in education as a teacher, counselor, principal and superintendent at all levels of the public school system I have seen the power of parents to turn around the course of a student’s academic career over and over. It is never too late to be that parent who can say “I helped”.
After my successful public-school career, it is a pleasure to put some of what I’ve learned to use helping parents and students achieve those goals.
Be an Involved Parent be sure you set the right atmosphere in your home that encourages learning
Be a positive and encouraging participant in the journey
Help with the learning process but don’t take over or do too much
Be an advocate for your child
Monitor your child’s progress
Be a role model for the importance of learning
Help them learn the importance of setting goals
Help them learn that failures are part of the journey and opportunities to learn
Help them understand that asking for help is not a sign of weakness
Find ways to make learning fun, encourage their imagination to make learning interactive
If you come to the point as a parent that you are at a loss, ask for help. Go to your school counselor or your child’s teacher or get help from an outside organization or expert. If you’re still at a loss go to my website www.harveyhazen.coach and book a free thirty-minute call. Perhaps I can assist in adding some context to the points above. If you would like ongoing assistance that can be arranged as well.
